Q. Why Ghana?
A. Ghana is known for its plentiful resources, amazing people and historic landmarks such as the slave castles. Many of our ancestors left its shores and never returned, but today we provide opportunities to engage in a culturally redemptive journey critical for black identity development.
Q. What does my cost cover?
A. This amount includes roundtrip airfare, food, transportation and all programing costs while in Ghana.
Q.What other costs should I consider?
A. Domestic travel to/from the mandatory briefing, to/from airport of international departure (TBD), immunizations, passport fees (if applicable) and spending money.
Q.What immunizations do I need?
A. The CDC recommends the following immunizations if you’re traveling to Ghana. Don’t fret, we will cover these in more detail once you’re accepted.
Q. Is there a different rate for couples ?
A. No, the investment amount listed on the Sankofa 360 page is per person. Couples will be responsible for the individual rate (x2).
Q. Will you help me fundraise?
A. Yes. Once you apply and are accepted, you will have the option to be part of a fundraising team and matched with a support coach until you reach your goal. We have a 100% success rate for participants in the fundraising program.
Q. Is this a mission trip?
A. No! We engage in immersion actperiences that empower people through education and civic engagement initiatives. We build culturally competent leaders to better impact global, diverse communities.
Q. What will we do?
A. We will engage in conversations and curriculum about black identity, personal development and spirituality. In addition, we will visit historical sites such as slave castles, the Kwame Nkrumah National Memorial and more! Lastly, we will partner with Ghanaian leaders to facilitate one or more civic service projects. Take a look at this Sankofa Schedule.
Q. Is Ghana safe?
A. Absolutely! Ghana is one of the safest nations in the world. The people are very friendly and you should have little to no concern for your personal safety.
Q. Where will we stay?
A. We stay in university hostels and housing similar to American style college residence halls.
Q. What will we eat?
A. There is no such thing as organic food in Ghana because it’s all natural! There are plenty of local dishes and a variety of foods you will explore.
Q. Will I be able to use my cellphone, laptop and other technology to communicate with friends and family back in the U.S?
A. Yes, however depending on the location, Ghana’s internet isn’t as stable as most networks in the U.S.
Q.What else should I know about the trip?
A. We will spend considerable time covering all the nuts and bolts of international travel at the mandatory briefing March 13-15, in Indianapolis, IN (details tbd). Everything from cultural traditions and customs, to trip logistics and packing tips.
Q. Can I bring my small children?
A. Unfortunately, due to certain liabilities we will only allow persons eighteen and older to travel. No child will be permitted to travel with parents or guardians unless they meet the application criteria and apply separately.
